Fund for the Arts Announces 2003 Whittenberg Scholarship Award

The Fund for the Arts announces the 2003 recipient of the William Tolbert Whittenberg Fund for Excellence Scholarship. On May 29th, the scholarship committee selected Edward Allen Heavrin of Louisville as this year’s award winner. Edward is a 2002 graduate of DuPont Manual High School/Youth Performing Arts School and has just completed his freshman year as a Vocal Music Performance major at the University of Kentucky. Mr. Heavrin will be using the scholarship monies to attend the Opera Theater and Music Festival of Lucca, Italy. This extensive five-week summer training program is sponsored by the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

Students participating in the Lucca Festival will enjoy the opportunity of being immersed in Italian culture while undertaking intensive study of Italian language, opera theater and vocal technique. The culmination of the Festival studies will be a fully-staged student performance of Dominick Argento's, Casanova's Homecoming.

Edward has performed on several occasions as a chorus member in productions by the Kentucky Opera, as well as performing lead roles in musicals by the Youth Performing Arts School. He is a student of Dr. Stephen King at the University of Kentucky.

The Whittenberg Scholarship for Excellence was established in 1987 as a vision of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Whittenberg to enable gifted students to pursue advanced study in the performing arts. Applicants must be residents of the Kentuckiana region, between the ages of 16 and 20, with plans to pursue a professional career in the performing arts.

Additional finalists for the 2003 award included Jennifer Ancuri, theatre, Joshua Ford, dance, Eric Kinny, piano, Mallory Mann, dance, Greg Monsma, voice, Michelle Oppel, dance, Liam Toner, theatre, Martha Ann Underhill, dance, Sara Vize, voice and Matthew Zeckner, saxophone.

Launchings

Resolution and Resolve by Alex Schmitz

This energetic group of seven young artists is at a formative point in their careers. Each artist presented is developing an individual voice, and as expected, the work is visceral and intuitive. All of the artists have recently finished their Bachelor of Fine Arts and are either enrolled in graduate school or working in their studios, and outside of the academic environment.

As such, it is a challenging period for these young professionals. The seven artists featured in Launchings are off to a strong career start – each demonstrating the passion and talent required for professional success in the visual arts. Launchings is a small exhibit packed with big ideas, powerful images, and a "sneak peek" into the future of visual arts in Kentuckiana.
