The Kentucky Center, Fund for the Arts and the Louisville Orchestra will present a special Gheens Great Expectations concert titled “A Making Music Celebration” on Wednesday, February 6, at 7 pm in Whitney Hall.  This program will celebrate Louisville’s rich tradition of Bringing the Arts to Youth by featuring the Louisville Orchestra in a public version of its renowned MakingMusic educational concerts with a Gheens Great Expectations young artist as soloist.  Gheens Great Expectations is proud to present violinist Jinjoo Cho.  Cho will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the Louisville Orchestra, conducted by Jason Seber.

This program is a celebration of The Louisville Orchestra’s six decades of introducing children to the joys of orchestral music; The Kentucky Center’s commitment through programs like the Gheens Great Expectations Project to championing the cause of arts education; the Fund for the Arts 2008 Campaign Kick-Off week supporting programs like MakingMusic, and an ever-growing spirit of partnership and collaboration among arts organizations.

Additionally, this program will celebrate Keith Cook, a violinist with The Louisville Orchestra, and a devoted violin teacher through the West End Talent Education Center (WESTEC) and The Kentucky Center’s ArtsReach Violin Studio program.  During the evening’s program, Keith will be honored with the 2008 Gheens Premier Award in Education.  All attendees are invited to a special reception in the North lobby after the concert in honor of Keith.  This event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

Launchings

Resolution and Resolve by Alex Schmitz

This energetic group of seven young artists is at a formative point in their careers. Each artist presented is developing an individual voice, and as expected, the work is visceral and intuitive. All of the artists have recently finished their Bachelor of Fine Arts and are either enrolled in graduate school or working in their studios, and outside of the academic environment.

As such, it is a challenging period for these young professionals. The seven artists featured in Launchings are off to a strong career start – each demonstrating the passion and talent required for professional success in the visual arts. Launchings is a small exhibit packed with big ideas, powerful images, and a "sneak peek" into the future of visual arts in Kentuckiana.
